Work In Progress (WIP)
The term Work In Progress (WIT) is frequently used in the Lean Production environment. The Work In Progress refers to the work that can be in one out of many different stages of the production system, between the raw material and the finished product.
When you're looking for an optimal production management system, your goal is to minimize the Work In Progress. And there are several reasons:
- it requires storage space
- it carries the risk of expiring
- it represents capital that isn't available for investment
The JIT - Just-In-Time production system main goal is to exactly decrease the work in progress by attempting to have a continuous configuration of the service or product.
