Theory of Constraints
The Theory of Constraints is an alternative system type to an MRP system or to a Kanban System. The Theory of Constraints main idea is the fact that any production system has at least one bottleneck that limits the output. So, increasing the capacity of any station, except for the bottleneck, won't do anything.
The Theory of Constraints includes several different tools that continuously examine the system looking for ways to keep improving. There are 5 tools that are usually the ones used by most organizations:
- the conflict resolution diagram
- the current reality tree
- the prerequisite tree
- the future reality tree
- the transition tree.
